Sharing Popolo Recipes: Apple Crisp
It’s been a while since I last shared a recipe blog for Popolo Catering, and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to present my favorite Thanksgiving dessert. Move over, Pumpkin Pie – it’s time for a drumroll-worthy treat: Apple Crisp! This is the very recipe I created years ago when a bride requested Apple Crisp as the wedding dessert for 200 guests. So, preparing it for your small family will be a breeze.
What Makes Apple Crisp Stand Out?
I’m a big fan of this dessert for Thanksgiving because of its simplicity. You get all the delightful apple flavor of a pie without the hassle of making a pie crust. That means you’ll have more time for other Thanksgiving food prep. As someone who loves making things from scratch, I appreciate the convenience of skipping the pie crust step. The oat crumble topping takes this dessert up a notch with its cinnamon and brown sugar flavor. You can easily double or triple this recipe. Instead of making multiple pies, you can use a larger baking dish to serve a crowd effortlessly.
What Sets My Recipe Apart?
What sets this recipe apart, in my opinion, is the addition of orange zest and juice. It adds an extra layer of flavor to this fall dessert, and it’s so simple to do. Your guests will be delighted with the fresh taste.
Now, here’s the recipe:
Ingredients
Filling
4-5 Granny Smith Apples
1 cup brown sugar
Zest and juice of 1 orange
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
A pinch of salt
– Optional: 1 tsp cardamom
Topping
1½ cup rolled oats
1 cup flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 stick of cold butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
– Optional: 1 tsp cardamom
**Cardamom wasn’t part of my original recipe, but I added it later for its depth of flavor**
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Peel and slice apples into ¼ inch slices and place them directly into the baking dish you plan to use to save on extra dishes.
- Sprinkle the remaining filling ingredients over the apples and toss them together. Set it aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix all the dry topping ingredients together.
- Dice the cold butter into cubes and, using your fingertips or a fork, combine the butter with the dry ingredients until well mixed.
- Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apples.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the topping crisps and turns a nice golden brown.
This dish is delicious whether served warm or cold, and I like to top it with fresh whipped cream.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I have over the years. I look forward to making it every Thanksgiving and sharing it with others.
